"Primitive" Greek Art: Large Statuary

Archaic Greeks were well known for creating the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the majority of the statues. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and unclothed. The his explanation kouroi grew to be life-sized starting in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more sophisticated forms of federal government and art, and acquired more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. During this time and other durations of historic tumult, encounters often happened, including battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
